Hello Paul. I've changed the belts a few times on my car and I didn't have the problem you mention. Once the tensioning idler wheel is released there should be enough slack in the belt to come off the idler wheels, camshaft wheel and then crankshaft wheel. The engine in my car used to have an early type oil pump which I subsequently changed to a later type with the extra idler wheel so I've changed the belts on both types without the problem you mention.
