Hello Ian. I haven't had to work on this problem so I don't know the answers to your questions! But just thinking aloud, how do you know you found the intermittent unit? Or have you just found a box with nothing connected to it and assumed it's the unit? I've had my wipers dye on me completely; in fact it was an intermittent problem for a while and then the wipers stopped during VERY heavy rain. My problem was a plug and socket in the stalk wiring inside the steering column cowling. By disconnecting plugs/sockets underneath the steering column you'll find it and should be able to follow the wires from there. Also, with the intermittent wipe on and the dashboard wiper high speed button pressed, the button light comes on and off with the wipers so presumably following the wires from the high speed button might get you to the right place too. If nobody comes up with a 'proper' answer for you, let me know where the intermittent unit is and I'll have a look in my car to see where the wires come from.
