Thanks Theo, that's a very useful explanation. It's reassuring to know that the manual is correct! Looking at the Autodata graphic again it doesn't make sense. Even reading the numbers as the firing sequence i.e. 1 (1), 2 (3), 3 (4), 4 (2) it appears to have the last two the wrong way around. They do print the right order in the text i.e. 1-3-2-4 and maybe I'm reading the diagram incorrectly. OK so now that that's clear, what do you make of the cylinder numbering that is shown on the electrical diagram 'Variant for Cars with Electronic Injection' that's included with the drivers manual. This appears to show NS front as No. 2, NS rear as No. 1, OS front as No. 3 and OS rear as No. 4.
