Thanks for the suggestion Geoff. At the weekend I ran it with the lead from the injection water temperature sensor connected to a separate sensor just taped into the engine bay to run at 'normal' air temperature, figuring that it might run a bit rich but would keep going and if it did so then I would know there was a problem with the sensor. The result though was the same so I think that's shown that it's not a problem with the sensor. A friend in the village who has much older cars suggested that it could be a problem with the ignition circuit rather than fuel and that the coil might be breaking down when hot so I'm going to look at this as well, but unfortunately I don't think I'll be ready for Gaydon. The 'wheel bearing' problem that stopped the car going to Turin wasn't a wheel bearing at all, in fact the problem was that the top thrust plate on the shock absorber had failed completely through rust, and I suspect the additional weight in the boot contributed. This is fixed now though, but the engine problem is a nuisance. Lots of work for the winter!
