Yesterday I changed the water pump on my car and as before I broke the thermostat housing while trying to take it out of the old pump! I didn't have a spare housing without the thermostat innards but I did have two original Gamma thermostats. I tested both of them and they both seemed to work, so I simply picked one and fitted it to the new pump and removed the thermostat from the top hose and the restrictor I fitted to the pipe that feeds the pump from the top crossbar. The engine now warms up slightly faster than before but the running temperature is slightly higher than before. While the temperature before was slightly under the halfway mark, it now settles just over the halfway mark. I think at some point I’d like to go back to my top-hose thermostat modification; especially since it worked so well recently in an extremely hot Turin but I don’t think it’s possible to remove a Gamma thermostat without removing the pump and I don’t fancy doing that again soon!
