There are radiator cleaning liquids usually called "Rad-Flush" or similar. They are discaling liquids similar to the ones used to discale kettles and other appliances. Some are stronger than others and are used for a quick clean (15 minutes fast idle) while others are weaker and left in the cooling system for longer (a couple of days). I have tried the weaker type which I found totally ineffective in cleaning the radiator and both times I had to replace the water pump shortly afterwards which I don't consider to be a coincidence. I have also tried removing the radiator from my Fiat 131 1600CL and filling it with very hot water and strong discaler. It didn't work! But changing the radiator did!
